Young Nursing Professionals at Universitas Airlangga Educate Parents on Managing Febrile Seizures in Children at Universitas Airlangga Hospital

NERS NEWS — The Nursing Professional Education Program of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, Batch B27, conducted a Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) activity titled “Beware of Febrile Seizures in Children: Recognize, Respond, and Prevent” on Thursday, July 9, 2026, in the waiting area of the Pediatric Outpatient Clinic at Universitas Airlangga Hospital. The program aimed to improve parents’ understanding of the initial management of febrile seizures, enabling them to provide appropriate first aid before professional medical treatment is available.

The activity began with an opening session led by the moderator, followed by an educational presentation covering the definition of febrile seizures, their causes, types, signs and symptoms, possible complications, preventive measures, and the correct first-aid steps when a child experiences a febrile seizure. The material was delivered interactively through lectures and question-and-answer sessions, supported by educational leaflets and posters to help participants better understand the information.

The educational session was conducted by nine students from the Nursing Professional Education Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, under the supervision of both academic and clinical instructors. The participants included parents and family members waiting for services at the Pediatric Outpatient Clinic of Universitas Airlangga Hospital. Throughout the session, participants demonstrated great enthusiasm by paying close attention to the presentation and actively participating in the discussion. One participant asked about the appropriate action when a child experiences a seizure while clenching their teeth. The presenters explained that placing any object into the child’s mouth may cause injury. Instead, the recommended first-aid measure is to gently turn the child onto their side and ensure that the airway remains open.

This activity was organized as part of promotive and preventive efforts to improve public health literacy, particularly regarding the management of febrile seizures in children. The education was provided because many parents are still unfamiliar with proper first-aid procedures and may perform inappropriate actions when their child has a seizure. Through this program, participants were expected to recognize warning signs, perform appropriate first aid, and understand when immediate medical attention is necessary. In addition to increasing public knowledge, the activity also provided nursing professional students with opportunities to develop their communication, health education, and community service competencies.

The program supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) by improving public knowledge of child health and basic emergency management at home. It also contributes to SDG 4 (Quality Education) by providing health education as part of lifelong learning and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through collaboration between the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, and Universitas Airlangga Hospital in delivering health education.

Through this PKRS activity, it is hoped that parents and family members will gain a better understanding of febrile seizures, enabling them to provide appropriate initial management and reduce the risk of harmful actions during seizure episodes. This activity represents the tangible contribution of the Nursing Professional Education Program students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, in promoting public health through practical, community-oriented health education.
