NERS NEWS – Professional Nursing students from Group 3 of the Maternity Nursing clinical rotation successfully conducted a Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) program themed “Love Yourself: Prevent Cervical Cancer Starting Today.” The session took place in the Merpati Ward at RSUD Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Surabaya, on Friday, June 5, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM WIB. The educational campaign targeted inpatients and their families—specifically adult women—aiming to elevate public knowledge and awareness regarding early cervical cancer prevention. Through this initiative, the student team hopes to reinforce the understanding that cervical cancer is highly preventable through healthy lifestyle choices, HPV vaccination, and regular screening.
The outreach campaign was delivered through interactive lectures and two-way discussions, structured simply to ensure seamless comprehension. The comprehensive material covered the definition of cervical cancer, its associated risk factors, warning signs and symptoms, the vital importance of early screening via visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) or Pap smear tests, and practical preventive measures for daily life.
The audience, predominantly comprising adult women in line with the target demographics, demonstrated profound enthusiasm. This engagement was highlighted by numerous questions and insights raised during the Q&A block, fostering a lively and communicative atmosphere. The interactive session gained further momentum when the clinical instructor, Mrs. Lilik, stepped in to provide additional expert clinical insights, solidifying the importance of reproductive health maintenance and routine diagnostic checks as primary preventive steps against cervical malignancies.
This program aimed to boost community health literacy, particularly empowering women to prioritize reproductive wellness and confidently pursue regular screenings. The education is envisioned to foster an understanding that reproductive check-ups are an essential act of self-care and family protection, enabling early detection or complete prevention. Through these promotive and preventive efforts, the UNAIR Professional Nursing students directly contribute to the global framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically:
SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being: Improving female health outcomes and combating oncological burdens.
SDG 4: Quality Education: Delivering high-quality, accessible public health literacy.
SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals: Strengthening strategic clinical collaborations between academic institutions and tertiary referral hospitals.
Through this PKRS framework, the Professional Nursing students at Universitas Airlangga hope that participants will implement the knowledge gained and act as health advocates within their families and communities. This initiative serves as a tangible reflection of student empowerment in elevating public health standards through applicable and sustainable education. By fostering strong synergies among healthcare providers, educational bodies, and the public, it is highly anticipated that awareness regarding early detection will continuously thrive, ultimately suppressing cervical cancer incidence rates in the future.
