NERS NEWS — Students of the Nursing Professional Education Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, conducted a health education session on Effective Breastfeeding Techniques for parents of infants in the Perina Waiting Room of Universitas Airlangga Hospital on Friday, May 29, 2026. This activity aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of parents, particularly mothers, in applying proper breastfeeding techniques to support the success of exclusive breastfeeding.
The educational session began with the presentation of materials on the importance of breast milk for infant growth and development, maternal preparation for breastfeeding, comfortable positioning for the baby, proper latch-on techniques, signs that a baby is receiving sufficient breast milk, how to safely release the baby’s latch, and how to burp the baby after feeding. In addition to lectures, the activity also included demonstrations, allowing participants to directly observe and practice effective breastfeeding techniques.
This activity was conducted by the Young Nurse Program students of the Nursing Professional Education Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, Cohort B27, targeting parents of infants, especially mothers and fathers. The educational session took place in the Perina Waiting Room of Universitas Airlangga Hospital from 12:30 p.m. to 1:55 p.m. Throughout the activity, participants showed great enthusiasm in following the presentations, demonstrations, and question-and-answer sessions conducted by the education team.
This activity was motivated by the fact that some postpartum mothers still lack understanding regarding breastfeeding positions, proper latch-on techniques, and effective methods of breastfeeding. Such conditions may prevent infants from receiving breast milk optimally and increase the risk of sore nipples, blocked milk ducts, and failure to achieve exclusive breastfeeding. Through this educational program, parents are expected to be able to apply appropriate breastfeeding techniques so that the health of both mother and baby can be better maintained.
The educational activity on effective breastfeeding techniques supports the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely:
- SDG 2: Zero Hunger, because breast milk is the best source of nutrition for infants and plays an important role in preventing malnutrition and stunting.
- SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, through efforts to improve maternal and infant health and prevent various problems caused by improper breastfeeding techniques.
- SDG 4: Quality Education, through the provision of health education to the community to improve knowledge and skills in infant care.
Through this educational activity, the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, remains committed to contributing to public health improvement through evidence-based health education practices. It is hoped that the knowledge gained by participants can be applied in their daily lives, thereby increasing the success of exclusive breastfeeding and ensuring the optimal health of both mothers and infants.
