Getting Moving Again with Active ROM: Group 11 of the PKD Nursing Rotation Conducts Health Education

NERS NEWS — Surabaya, August 14, 2026 — Group 11 of the Basic Nursing Profession (PKD) Rotation, Nursing Profession Program students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, conducted a health education session on Range of Motion (ROM) for patients’ families in IRNA 7A Grha Trimed, Universitas Airlangga Hospital, on Friday, August 14, 2026. The activity, attended by nine participants, was conducted to increase families’ understanding of the importance of joint movement exercises in helping maintain and improve patients’ mobility.

The health education session was held in the student area and was hosted by Cici Yulia as the Master of Ceremony (MC). The ROM material was delivered by Khairun Nisa’ Anabila, while Savira Ratnadewati Nirwasita demonstrated ROM exercises and explained the movements to the participants. The activity used health education and demonstration methods, allowing participants to receive explanations while directly observing examples of ROM exercises.

During the session, participants were introduced to Range of Motion (ROM) as active and passive joint movement exercises aimed at maintaining or improving the joints’ ability to move normally and properly. ROM exercises can also help improve muscle strength. The material covered active ROM, which is performed independently by the patient, and passive ROM, which is performed with assistance.

In addition to explaining the definition and types of ROM, the presenter discussed various benefits of ROM exercises, including improving physical fitness, maintaining overall physical condition, reducing muscle stiffness, improving blood circulation, and helping reduce stress. ROM exercises can also be performed by individuals experiencing prolonged bed rest or joint stiffness, as well as those seeking to maintain balance and mobility.

During the demonstration, Savira Ratnadewati Nirwasita demonstrated ROM movements while explaining each exercise to the participants. The material was delivered in an easy-to-understand manner so that patients’ families could gain a clear understanding of joint movement exercises that can support the maintenance of patients’ mobility.

The session also emphasized the importance of assessing the patient’s condition before performing ROM exercises. Exercises should not be performed when a person is experiencing severe pain or a recent injury, dizziness, shortness of breath, extreme weakness, chest pain or heart palpitations, or in preoperative conditions involving the hip area.

This health education activity was a contribution by Nursing Profession students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, to improving health literacy among patients’ families. Education about ROM also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, through promotive and educational efforts to support patients’ health and well-being. In addition, the activity aligns with SDG 4: Quality Education by providing health education to families so they can gain better knowledge and support patient care.

Through this activity, the students hoped that education about ROM would help patients’ families understand the importance of mobility and safe joint movement exercises. The activity also represents the role of nursing students in providing health education to the community and supporting the achievement of sustainable development goals in health and education.
