Improve Parenting Skills, Unair Nursing Professional Students Conduct Infant Care Education at Dr. Soetomo Regional General Hospital

NERS NEWS — Nursing Professional Practice students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, Batch B27 Group 2, conducted a health education session on the importance of infant care at home on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at 9:00 AM in the VK Obgyn Emergency Room of Dr. Soetomo General Hospital. The activity aimed to improve the knowledge of mothers and family members regarding proper infant care at home, including bathing a baby, changing diapers, umbilical cord care, and correct breastfeeding techniques.

The activity was conducted under the supervision of Mira Triharini as the academic supervisor and Dwi Fadjar Mahardini as the clinical supervisor. It formed part of the students’ clinical learning process and community service activities within the teaching hospital setting. The session began with an opening and an introduction by the student presenters, followed by a discussion on the importance of infant care at home to maintain babies’ health, hygiene, and optimal growth and development.

The educational materials covered safe and comfortable baby bathing techniques, proper diaper-changing procedures to prevent skin irritation and diaper rash, umbilical cord care to keep the area clean and dry and reduce the risk of infection, as well as correct breastfeeding techniques, including proper positioning of the mother and baby, effective latch-on methods, and the benefits of breastfeeding for infants. Throughout the session, participants demonstrated strong enthusiasm, as reflected in their attentiveness and active participation during the question-and-answer and discussion sessions.

The health education program was conducted in an orderly, smooth, and conducive manner and concluded with a group documentation session. A brief evaluation was also carried out through oral questions to assess participants’ understanding of the material presented. The evaluation results showed that most participants were able to explain the proper steps for bathing a baby, changing diapers, performing umbilical cord care, and applying appropriate breastfeeding techniques. These findings indicate that the educational session was well received and had a positive impact on participants’ knowledge.

Through this activity, it is hoped that mothers and family members will not only understand infant care theoretically but also be able to apply these skills independently at home. As a result, infants’ health, hygiene, and growth and development can be maintained optimally, while the risk of health problems can be minimized.
