NERS NEWS — As a concrete effort to improve the quality of rehabilitation for mental health patients, Professional Nursing Practice students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga (Unair), held an innovative Group Activity Therapy (TAK) for Perception Stimulation. The activity was carried out in the Jatayu Ward of Prof. Dr. Moeljono Hospital, Surabaya. Introducing a new method called the “Scenario Card Challenge,” the therapy targeted 10 patients with a nursing diagnosis of Risk for Violent Behavior (RPK).
According to the 2023 Indonesia Health Survey (SKI), the prevalence of households with a member suffering from schizophrenia/psychosis reached 4.0%. Patients with this condition are prone to difficulty controlling their emotions and are at risk of physical or verbal aggression if they do not receive comprehensive treatment. Until now, TAK sessions have often been dominated by one-way lecture methods that quickly bore patients. Responding to this challenge, Endah Nabila Sutrisno Putri, the group’s Leader, initiated the use of the Scenario Card Challenge.
“Through this scenario card media, patients don’t just listen to theory, they’re directly invited to simulate everyday conflicts through role play. The goal is for them to be able to express anger honestly and firmly, while still respecting others, which is what we call assertive behavior,” said Endah during the activity.
This interactive therapy was divided into two challenge levels:
Level 1 (Response Identification): Patients read situation cards depicting triggering conflicts, identify the emotions that arise, and learn to distinguish between aggressive, passive, and assertive responses.
Level 2 (Complex Role Play): Patients receive more complex case scenarios and directly practice assertive communication in front of other group members.
The success of this program was made possible through the solid teamwork of Jatayu Group 1, whose members include Nur Asa Malinda, Rista Zulfidha Rindi, Fianita Fitri Sa’idah, Syah Reza Alfiana Nuro Aini, and Aprilia Anggi Puspita. The therapy session was conducted under strict and professional supervision, with academic guidance from Rr. Dian Tristiani, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., and clinical guidance from Abdul Salam, S.Kep., Ns.
Prof. Dr. Moeljono Hospital, Surabaya, welcomed this innovation positively. The therapy is expected to be implemented sustainably in the Jatayu Ward to reduce incidents of violent behavior and accelerate patients’ social recovery before returning to the community.
