NERS NEWS — Surabaya, September 25, 2026 — Group 10 of the Nursing Profession Education Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, conducted a Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) activity on Preventing the Risk of Postoperative Infections for patients’ families in the Surgical Operating Room Waiting Area of Universitas Airlangga Hospital (RSUA). This activity was carried out to improve families’ knowledge so they could help prevent infections and support patients’ recovery after surgery.
The health education session was conducted through lectures and question-and-answer sessions using leaflets and posters. The materials covered the definition of infection, causes of infection, signs and symptoms of postoperative infections, prevention of surgical wound infections, things to consider after surgery, and factors influencing the incidence of postoperative infections.
The session was held on Friday, September 25, 2026, in the Surgical Operating Room Waiting Area of RSUA. The activity took place from 9:38 to 10:18 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB) and was attended by patients’ families. Initially, there were 10 participants, but the number decreased to 8 because two participants were called by doctors to attend to their family members in the post-anesthesia recovery room. During the session, participants actively engaged in the discussion, with three participants asking questions.

This health education activity aimed to help families understand the risk of infection after surgery, recognize its signs and symptoms, and learn the steps they could take to prevent infections. Educating families is important because they play a role in maintaining hygiene, supporting wound care according to healthcare professionals’ instructions, ensuring medication adherence, and recognizing changes in patients’ conditions during recovery.
Through this activity, Group 10 also sought to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, by improving health knowledge and preventing postoperative complications. Health education for families is expected to encourage community involvement in maintaining health and improve the quality of patient care during recovery.
- SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being — through education on infection prevention and improving the health knowledge of patients’ families.
- SDG 4: Quality Education — through the provision of health education to patients’ families as part of learning and practice in the Nursing Profession Education Program.
The PKRS activity on preventing the risk of postoperative infections was carried out successfully and received active participation from patients’ families. This activity is expected to improve families’ understanding of how to support patients during recovery and encourage the implementation of appropriate care practices to help prevent postoperative infections.
