Prevent the Risk of Fractures in the Elderly, Unair Nursing Students Hold Osteoporosis Education at RSUA

NERS NEWS – Surabaya – In an effort to improve the quality of life of the elderly, several students from the Nursing Professional Program of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga (FKp Unair), held a health education session in IRNA 3 Ward at Universitas Airlangga Hospital (RSUA) on Thursday (16/4). The activity focused on introducing osteoporosis and practical steps to prevent falls, which commonly occur among older adults.

Osteoporosis, often referred to as a “silent disease,” became the main concern because its symptoms frequently go unnoticed until a fracture occurs. According to the presentation delivered by Group 7 students of Batch B27, this condition is caused by decreased bone density as people age. Without proper treatment, bone loss can lead to changes in posture such as stooping, reduced height, and even permanent disability caused by minor injuries.

“Many people think osteoporosis is only a problem for the elderly, even though prevention should begin early through a healthy diet and an active lifestyle,” said the presenting team in front of patients’ families who filled the IRNA 3 Ward.

In addition to discussing bone health, the education session also highlighted the high risk of falls among the elderly, which is triggered by declining vision and balance functions. The students provided practical tips on home environment modifications, such as ensuring adequate lighting, installing handrails in bathrooms, and avoiding slippery carpets to minimize the risk of accidents at home.

Ilma Amalia, the moderator of the event, explained that the participants showed high enthusiasm. This was evident from the many family members who asked about safe types of exercise for osteoporosis sufferers and calcium-rich foods other than milk.

The one-hour activity concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session and the distribution of educational leaflets. Through these preventive efforts, it is hoped that patients’ families will become more aware of maintaining the bone health of their elderly family members and be able to create a safer home environment to prevent the risk of fatal fractures.
