Prevention of Surgical Wound Infections at the HCU Obgyn, RSUD Dr. Soetomo

NERS NEWS — Students of the Professional Nursing Education Program (Ners), Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, Group 4, Batch B27, conducted a Hospital Health Education (PKRS) session themed “Prevention of Surgical Wound Infections” on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at the Waiting Room of the HCU Obgyn, RSUD Dr. Soetomo. The activity aimed to enhance the understanding of patients and their families regarding the importance of preventing infections in surgical wounds, in order to support the recovery process and improve patients’ quality of life.

The activity was carried out by Ners professional students of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, as part of their clinical practice in the Maternity Nursing rotation, under the academic supervision of Tiyas Kusumaningrum, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., and the clinical supervision of Kartika Rini, S.Keb., Bd. The session was attended by the families of patients in the HCU Obgyn Waiting Room.

Throughout the activity, participants appeared enthusiastic and actively engaged in the question-and-answer session. Several participants raised questions about the length of time needed for the body to recover. In response, the education team explained that recovery in post-operative patients depends on the individual’s condition, including comorbidities, nutritional status, dietary compliance, and follow-up care. In addition, the team also provided examples of high-protein foods beneficial for wound healing, demonstrated the correct 6-step handwashing technique, and distributed educational posters as informational media that patients and families could refer to later.

This health education activity represents one form of contribution by the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, in supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being, which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all people at all ages through improved health education and the quality of healthcare services for the community.
