Tuberculosis Education Efforts for Children by Nursing Clinical Practice Students at the RSUA Pediatric Clinic

NERS NEWS – Nursing Clinical Practice students from Universitas Airlangga conducted a health education session on tuberculosis (TB) in children at the RSUA Pediatric Clinic on Tuesday (April 28, 2026), as an effort to improve parents’ knowledge regarding prevention, transmission, and early management of TB. This activity was carried out through direct education and distribution of informational materials to patients’ families, with the aim of reducing TB incidence in children and increasing public awareness of the importance of early detection.

The educational activity took place in the waiting area of the RSUA Pediatric Clinic, involving parents and family members of patients as the primary participants. The students delivered structured material covering the definition of tuberculosis in children, types of TB, causes and risk factors, modes of transmission, signs and symptoms, preventive measures, appropriate early management, and the role of parents in prevention. The session was conducted using an interactive lecture method, supported by educational media such as leaflets distributed to participants, PowerPoint presentations, and a question-and-answer session to enhance understanding. The activity lasted approximately 40 minutes, beginning with an opening session, followed by the main presentation, a Q&A session, and closing remarks. The session received positive responses and active participation from attendees.

This activity involved Nursing Clinical Practice students from Unair Class A1 Group A4 as the main organizers, responsible for planning, material preparation, and implementation of the session. It was supervised by academic advisor Mrs. Nuzul Qur’aniati, S.Kep., Ns., M.Ng., Ph.D., as well as clinical instructors Deasy Nusiyanti, S.Kep., Ns., and Ika Nursetyo Palupi, S.Kep., Ns., who provided guidance and evaluation throughout the activity. The session was conducted on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, in the waiting area of the RSUA Pediatric Clinic, chosen due to its accessibility to patients and families, making it an effective location for educational outreach. The activity was held in the morning from 08:00 to 08:40 WIB. The target participants were parents and family members of pediatric patients awaiting services, allowing the information provided to be directly applied in daily life, particularly in preventing and managing tuberculosis in children.

This educational initiative was motivated by the still high incidence of tuberculosis in children and the relatively low level of parental knowledge regarding its prevention and early detection. Therefore, the activity aimed to improve parents’ understanding of TB in children, including its transmission, signs and symptoms, preventive measures, appropriate early management, and the role of parents in prevention. Through this educational effort, participants are expected to adopt healthier lifestyles and become more vigilant about TB risks in children. Additionally, the activity contributes to increasing public awareness of the importance of early screening and adherence to TB treatment.

More broadly, this initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, which emphasizes efforts to end epidemics of communicable diseases, including tuberculosis, and to improve overall public health.

This activity had a positive impact in enhancing parents’ knowledge and awareness regarding the prevention and early detection of tuberculosis in children. It also demonstrates the contribution of educational institutions in community service through promotive and preventive efforts. It is hoped that similar activities will continue to be carried out sustainably in the future to support improved public health and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
