Universitas Airlangga Exchange Student Applies Gerontological and Family Nursing Care through Home Visits in the Diponegoro University MBKM Program

NERS NEWS — A Faculty of Nursing student from Universitas Airlangga participating in the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) Student Exchange Program at Diponegoro University conducted home visits as part of the Gerontological Nursing and Family Nursing clinical practice. The activity aimed to provide hands-on experience in implementing the comprehensive nursing process through home visits tailored to clients’ needs and health conditions.

During the Gerontological Nursing practice, a home visit was conducted for an older adult with osteoarthritis. Throughout the activity, the student carried out the nursing process systematically, including health assessment, identification of nursing problems, development of nursing interventions, implementation of nursing care, and evaluation of nursing outcomes. Health education was also provided to improve the client’s understanding of disease management and strategies for maintaining quality of life.

Meanwhile, during the Family Nursing practice, a home visit was conducted for a newly married couple in the early stage of family development. Based on the assessment findings, several family health needs were identified, including sleep pattern disturbances and preparation for pregnancy. As a follow-up, the student provided education on sleep hygiene practices, healthy lifestyle habits, and preconception preparation to support the couple’s health in planning for pregnancy.

The home visit activity served as a means for students to integrate theoretical knowledge with real-world community practice while developing critical thinking, therapeutic communication, and clinical decision-making skills. This experience also strengthened the students’ competencies in providing client-centered nursing care and supported the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-Being and SDG 4: Quality Education.

Through this activity, students are expected to further enhance their professional competencies and provide holistic, evidence-based nursing care that meets the needs of individuals and families across different stages of life.
