Universitas Airlangga Students Enhance Elderly Cognitive Function through Picture Guessing Therapy at UPTD Griya Wreda

NERS NEWS – Students of PKK Group C1 from the Bachelor of Nursing Program, Universitas Airlangga (Unair), conducted a Group Activity Therapy (TAK) program for the elderly through a Picture Guessing game. The activity took place on Friday, April 10, 2026, from 09.00 to 10.00 WIB at UPTD Griya Wreda, Surabaya City. This program was carried out as an effort to improve the cognitive function and visual perception of elderly participants, where they were asked to observe and guess the names of objects on worksheets provided by the facilitators to stimulate memory and social interaction.

This activity was designed as a form of sensory stimulation intervention to help the elderly maintain memory, concentration, and object recognition skills through fruit picture media. Through this method, participants were encouraged to observe images and write the names of objects independently or interactively. It was expected to reduce boredom while also improving their socialization skills in facing the challenges of dementia.

The activity involved elderly participants on Friday, April 10, 2026, at UPTD Griya Wreda, Surabaya City. The implementation was carried out by students from the Class of 2023, namely Bintang Diatas Sammudra, Moh Ali Imron, Titania Arum Dwi Kurniawati, and Aufa Nur Aisyah Kurnianti. This program was conducted as part of their Gerontic Nursing clinical practice.

With the theme “Picture Guessing,” this therapy aimed to improve memory, concentration, and the visual perception ability of the elderly in recognizing objects through supportive group interaction. The program directly supported the achievement of SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being by contributing to the emotional well-being and mental health of the elderly, as well as SDG 4: Quality Education by providing practical knowledge on cognitive and psychosocial stimulation, while the elderly received education through brain stimulation exercises to help them remain optimally functional.

Through this activity, it is hoped that it can become a sustainable intervention model to support the achievement of SDG Target 3, namely ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all ages. The institution remains committed to creating innovations that bridge the academic curriculum with the real healthcare needs of society.
