NERS NEWS — On Friday, July 24, 2026, students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, namely Talitha Maulia Nada (A24), Muhammad Rayhan Ricardi Sudrajat (A23), and Sandrina Humairah (A23), together with students from the Japanese Red Cross Kyushu International College of Nursing (JRCKICN), prepared a community service program to be implemented on Oshima Island. Held at JRCKICN, the activity aimed to finalize the implementation of disaster preparedness education while strengthening collaboration between Indonesian and Japanese students.
During the activity, students from both institutions discussed the program flow, task distribution, and educational materials that would be delivered to the people of Oshima Island. The participants also practiced making emergency supplies from newspapers, including sandals, cups, and food containers, which can be used during disasters when access to basic necessities is limited. In addition, the students prepared educational materials on how to assemble an emergency bag by introducing essential items to bring, such as masks, tissues, wet wipes, regular medications, medication records, family contact information, copies of identification cards, and basic first-aid supplies.
The preparation was carried out collaboratively through discussions and hands-on practice, allowing Indonesian and Japanese students to exchange knowledge about disaster preparedness. The activity not only ensured the technical readiness of the program in Oshima Island but also strengthened cross-cultural communication and cooperation among students in developing educational activities tailored to the needs of the local community.
Through this preparation, the students gained experience in designing community-based health education programs while developing a deeper understanding of the importance of disaster preparedness. The program is expected to benefit the people of Oshima Island while strengthening the students’ competencies in delivering health education in an international setting.
The activity also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, through efforts to improve community disaster preparedness; SDG 4: Quality Education, through cross-border collaborative learning; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through strengthened international cooperation between the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, and the Japanese Red Cross Kyushu International College of Nursing.
