NERS NEWS – On Wednesday, April 29, 2026, students of the Nursing Professional Education Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, conducted a health education session at the Obgyn Clinic of Airlangga University Hospital. The activity carried the theme “Understanding and Preventing Gestational Diabetes Mellitus to Support a Healthy Pregnancy” and was attended by pregnant women and clinic visitors. From the beginning, the session was interactive, as participants were not only listening but also engaged in light discussions about their pregnancy experiences. The methods used included interactive lectures and question-and-answer sessions, supported by educational media such as leaflets and PowerPoint presentations, making the material more engaging and easier to understand.
The educational material focused on basic knowledge of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM), a condition characterized by increased blood glucose levels during pregnancy in women with no prior history of diabetes. It was explained that this condition generally occurs between 24–28 weeks of gestation due to hormonal changes that lead to insulin resistance. Participants were also informed about the main signs and symptoms, including the “3Ps” (polyuria, polydipsia, and polyphagia), as well as other symptoms such as fatigue, tingling sensations, and blurred vision. Risk factors such as high sugar intake, obesity, and a family history of diabetes were also discussed in a simple and relatable manner. One participant even remarked, “I thought frequent thirst and urination were normal during pregnancy, but it turns out they can also be signs of high blood sugar,” indicating an increase in understanding during the session.
In addition, the session emphasized the importance of early prevention and management of GDM. Participants were educated on adopting a healthy diet by limiting sugar and simple carbohydrate intake, increasing light physical activity such as walking, and routinely monitoring blood glucose levels during pregnancy. The activity was conducted under the supervision of Midwife Anisa, who observed the session and provided support throughout. Her presence helped ensure that the activity ran smoothly, orderly, and in accordance with the participants’ needs in the Obgyn Clinic.
Overall, the education session proceeded smoothly and orderly, receiving positive responses from participants who were actively involved in discussions and Q&A sessions. Participants were also able to correctly answer several simple evaluation questions at the end of the session, indicating that the material was well understood. Through this activity, it is expected that pregnant women will improve their knowledge and awareness in preventing and early detecting Gestational Diabetes Mellitus, thereby supporting a healthy pregnancy for both mother and fetus.
