NERS NEWS – Surabaya – The Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, once again demonstrated its commitment to enhancing the quality of postgraduate education by organizing a Guest Lecture featuring Associate Professor Dr. Gulzar Malik, PhD, an academic from La Trobe University, Australia, on Monday (July 13, 2026). The event was attended by Master of Nursing students as part of an effort to strengthen their competencies in implementing Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) in nursing.
Carrying the theme “Translating Evidence into Practice: Empowering Nurses through Evidence-Based Practice (EBP)”, Dr. Gulzar Malik emphasized that nurses play a strategic role in bridging research findings with clinical practice to ensure that healthcare services remain safe, effective, and patient-centered. The lecture explored the fundamental concepts of EBP, which integrates the best available scientific evidence, clinical expertise, and patients’ values and preferences in clinical decision-making.
During the session, Dr. Gulzar Malik explained that the EBP implementation process begins with identifying clinical questions using the PICOT or PCC approach, followed by searching for the best available evidence, critically appraising research quality, integrating evidence with clinical experience and patient preferences, evaluating implementation outcomes, and disseminating the results to relevant stakeholders. Participants were also introduced to several trusted evidence sources, including the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI), Cochrane Library, CINAHL, and PubMed, as primary references for evidence-based nursing practice.
In addition to discussing the stages of EBP implementation, the speaker highlighted common challenges faced by healthcare professionals, including limited time, insufficient organizational support, inadequate skills in critically appraising scientific evidence, and resistance to changes in clinical practice. To address these challenges, Dr. Gulzar Malik introduced the COM-B Model (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation–Behaviour) as a framework for facilitating behavioral change and successful evidence implementation in clinical settings.
The session was conducted interactively through group discussions based on case studies. Students analyzed various clinical issues, including fall prevention, reducing catheter-associated infections, supporting maternal mental health during the postpartum period, and utilizing digital applications to improve healthcare workers’ well-being. Through this approach, participants gained hands-on experience in developing EBP implementation strategies tailored to real-world healthcare contexts.
Through this Guest Lecture, Master of Nursing students are expected to further develop an academic culture that emphasizes research and evidence-based practice. The event also strengthened the international collaboration between the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, and La Trobe University in supporting the advancement of nursing education, research, and innovation that contributes to improving the quality of healthcare services.
